The historic town Mauterndorf is amid nature’s wondrous backdrop. This is the perfect place to emerge yourself in outdoor adventures, in the middle of the Alps.

The idyllic village of Mauterndorf, in the Lungau region at the southern end of Salzburgerland, is the perfect place to savour the Austrian Alps. In that picture-perfect setting, the Youth Hotel Mauser fits right in. Located in a 16th-century building in the centre of the medieval village, you will find almost everything you need for an enjoyable vacation at your doorstep.

Youth Hotel, Apartment House and Villa

The Mauser Family offer a wide range of accommodation. In the main Mauser-Mühltaler building, you can choose between 2- to 10-bed rooms. This is also where meals are served if you decide to include that. Across the courtyard, at the back of the main building, with a view of the surrounding countryside, you can stay in apartments perfectly equipped with separate living room/kitchen. Lastly, “Die Villa” is an exceptionally charming and modern guesthouse. It’s located a few hundred metres away from the main building.

Nevertheless, you have plenty of amenities, such as a spacious wellness area with a sauna, steam bath, tanning studio and quiet room. When you have settled in at the accommodation of your choice, it’s time to make every minute of your stay count.

All kinds of activities

Mauterndorf, amid the Austrian Alps, is the perfect setting for an active outdoor vacation. In the summer, there are numerous hiking trails suitable for everyone, from families with toddlers to experienced hikers. Furthermore, the region’s stunning landscape provides an excellent backdrop for bicycle trips. Whether you bike into the Valley at Tweng to enjoy the scenery or visit some nearby villages, such as St. Margarethen and Mariapfarr, you’re constantly surrounded by picturesque views. Nonetheless, don’t miss out on the sights just outside the doorstep of the Youth Hotel Mauser. The medieval castle, Burg Mauterndorf, is also well worth a visit and only a 10-minute walk away. Idyllic Mauterndorf is also the end station of the Taurachebahn, which takes you and your family on a pleasant trip to Tamsweg. Here you can enjoy shopping or maybe visit an Austrian café for some delicious cake. On the other hand, if you decide to take it easy for an afternoon, there is plenty of action around the Youth Hotel Mauser.

Family-friendly

At the Youth Hotel Mauser, numerous activities are offered on its premises. They have a football field, sand volleyball court and trampolins if you enjoy sports. Moreover, the family-run hotel also has a good choice of indoor activities, such as two table-tennis tables, air hockey, table football, a darts board and a large recreational room, ideal for dance or game nights. Boring is not an option.

Hiking to the source of the river Mur

I have visited numerous places along the River Mur, which flows 348 kilometres through Austria, before continuing through Slovenia and Croatia. This is one of the main rivers in the state of Styria and it flows through its state capital and Austria’s second-largest city Graz. Hence, it was time to see where it all starts and find […]

    Medieval adventures at Mauterndorf Castle

The castle in Mauterndorf is not to be overlooked as it is located on a mountain cliff at the edge of the village. The site has been fortified since 326 A.D., guarding the Roman trade route crossing the Tauern mountain pass. However, the castle itself is first mentioned in written records from 1253.
