Breakfast cruise on Lake Wörthersee

When the temperature rises above 30°C, it’s best to stay close to water. So we booked a breakfast cruise on Carinthia’s largest lake, Lake Wörthersee, and enjoyed a lovely day on the water.

We boarded the boat MS “Klagenfurt” at Metnitzstrand Park in Klagenfurt at 10:00, where a reserved table awaited us in the lounge. It was worth postponing breakfast and having it served on the water instead. The aroma of freshly baked rolls filled the lounge, which, along with cold cuts, juice and coffee, were served as soon as we left the quay. If you have any further requests, buy more food and drinks at the bar on board. Moreover, the view on this glorious August morning was impeccable through the large windows.

All-day hop-on hop-off ticket

Excellent weather, with a light breeze and sunshine from a blue sky, made the sailing a relaxing experience. A breakfast cruise, including a full-day ticket, allows you to cruise with a delicious meal and visit different places without stress. A few people came on board after a while, but we could enjoy the sailing in the lounge with our reserved table. You can move out onto one of the decks if you wish, but it was nice to stay in the shade as we were going to cruise for 3 hours before jumping off. This cruise package includes a full-day ticket and breakfast, allowing us to hop on and off wherever we wanted at any of the nine piers along the lake. You can hop on the next boat again or cancel the cruise. The boats pass the different piers every two hours.

Swimming and lunch in Pörtschach

For us, there was only one stop in Pörtschach, where we got off at 12:40 (on the return journey to Klagenfurt). We stayed here for 4 hours before jumping on board again to return to Klagenfurt, where we had parked the car. In Pörtschach, you will find a large bathing area (At the Promenadebad, admission costs EUR 6.50 for adults and 1.70 for children). The baths are open daily in summer, 9 am-8 pm), some accommodation and restaurants. We strolled around the park by the water and then went swimming before enjoying lunch at one of the restaurants.

Jump off at the casino or viewing tower

Velden, in the far west on the shores of Lake Wörthersee, is also a popular place to hop off the boat for sightseeing. The jetty is just outside the famous Schlosshotel Velden. Here you’ll find plenty of opportunities for water sports, a casino, many restaurants, shops and, of course, a lido. At Reifnitz, the 2nd stop from Klagenfurt, you can get off and combine the boat trip with a visit to the Pyramidenkogel viewing tower. There is a bus up to the tower from the pier, which corresponds with the boats. Along with the previously mentioned Pörtschach, these stops are the most interesting along the lake.

The boats of WSG Wörthersee Schifffahrt sail between 1 May and 31 October. For a very special experience, you can book a departure on the historic steamship from 1909 and the company’s flagship “Thalia”. You can book a ticket with or without breakfast on the early departures, and of course you don’t have to take the full tour as we did.
