History of Vienna’s Christmas Markets

The tradition of Christmas markets in Vienna dates back to 1722 when the first “Nikolo-, Christmas, and Crib Market” took place at Freyung. Conflicts led to its relocation to Am Hof in 1842, where it became a popular fixture. Despite the abolition of other annual markets in 1872, the Christkindlmarkt persisted, moving locations multiple times throughout the 20th century.

Since 1975, the market has found a permanent home at Rathausplatz, evolving into a beloved event that includes the “Vienna Advent Magic” in Rathauspark.
